Specialty:
Soil conservation and management
Background:
Laura is from the foothills of North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains. She received a B.S. degree in Botany from N.C. State in 1997. After working as a technician in the Biological and Agricultural Engineering Environmental Analysis Lab for three years, she accepted a position working at the Mountain Horticultural Crops Research Extension Center in Fletcher, N.C. While working there she accepted an assistantship to pursue a Master’s degree in Soil Science at N.C. State studying boron deficiency and chilling injury interactions in tobacco transplants. Upon the completion of that degree, she went on to pursue a Ph.D. in Soil Science, in which she investigated biological differences of alternative vegetable management systems. Specifically, she examined the microbial, earthworm, and nematode populations that dominate these systems and the resulting differences in carbon and nitrogen cycling and soil physical properties as compared to conventional agricultural management systems.
